Waterfront Beach Escape

Pelee Island is a marvelous destination to explore during spring, summer, and fall.

Due to its remote location, there are some essential things you should know before planning your visit.

  1. Business Hours: If you visit Pelee Island outside of the peak season, you may find that many businesses are not open. Most establishments operate from mid to late May until Labour Day weekend, and some may have reduced hours from Labour Day until early to mid October. Plan accordingly and check if the places you wish to visit will be open during your stay.

  2. Ferry: The ferry service to the island may occasionally get canceled due to adverse weather or mechanical issues. While rare, it's essential to be aware of this possibility and have alternative plans in case of any disruptions.

  3. Ferry Reservations: Regardless of how you plan to travel to the island, ferry reservations are now required. Ensure you book in advance through the Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC) website for a hassle-free trip.

  4. Fuel Up Beforehand: If you're bringing your vehicle to the island, make sure to fill up your tank before the journey. Fuel options on the island are limited.

  5. Transportation is Necessary: Pelee Island is larger than it may seem, so having transportation is crucial for exploring various attractions like beaches, the lighthouse, Fish Point, and trails. Bring your own vehicle, bike, or consider renting bikes,e-bikes, or golf carts.

  6. Water Considerations: This cottage does not have town water on the island, so it's essential to have drinkable water.  During the booking of the cottage, bottled water is an option to purchase.  However, bottled water can also be purchased from the local co-operative (although may not be in stock at times) and refilled at the local water station for a fee.  Water bottles for filling are available for free at the cottage.  Make sure you bring coins to do so.

  7. Book Cottage in Advance: Accommodations on Pelee Island can fill up quickly, so it's vital to book your stay well in advance to avoid being stranded without a place to stay.  The same is recommended for ferry service.

  8. Passport for US Visitors: If you're traveling from the USA, you must have a valid passport to visit Pelee Island, as it is an official port of entry to Canada.

  9. Wildlife Awareness: Embrace the island's wildlife, including snakes, turkeys, pheasants, and more. Although Pelee Island is home to snakes, they are non-venomous and generally avoid humans. Be cautious when driving to avoid harming wildlife.

  10. Bring Sufficient Supplies, with supplies also available at the local co-operative:

With these important tips in mind, you'll be well-prepared to embrace the natural beauty and tranquility of Pelee Island.

Enjoy your visit to this unique and captivating destination in Lake Erie!
